We are excited to announce that Campbell Chapel AME has been awarded a $219,000 matching grant from the National Fund for Sacred Places toward the restoration and rehabilitation of its Historic Chapel. The National Fund for Sacred Places is a program of Partners for Sacred Places and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Built in 1853 and subsequently purchased by nine formerly enslaved people in 1874, the Historic Campbell Chapel holds immense significance, was recently added to the National Register of Historic Places and is one of only two individually listed properties in the Bluffton, SC.
According to Presiding Elder and Pastor Jon Black, “once restored, the Historic Campbell Chapel will be a living piece of history, hosting lectures, educational experiences, daily tours, community events and weddings, connecting us to our past and inspiring generations to come.”

Having conducted a building assessment, developed architectural and construction plans, fulfilled regulatory abatement requirements while currently working to stabilize the structure, this grant provides much needed momentum to move into the restoration and rehabilitation phases. It’s matching grant component aids our capacity to complete the project by the end of 2025.

The Historic Campbell Chapel is one of twenty-four organizations across the country to receive $4 million
in grant funding from the National Fund for Sacred
Places in 2024. The National Fund for Sacred Places
is a one-of-a-kind program that offers support to congregations preserving historic and architecturally significant houses of worship.

Since its inception, the National Fund has awarded or pledged over $26 million to 138 community-serving congregations representing 26 faith traditions across 42 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. So far, this grantmaking has resulted in over $3 leveraged for every grant dollar invested in participating congregations.

The matching grant requires a 2 for 1 dollar match.  We acknowledge the much-appreciated support that we have received to date. Please support this major matching grant opportunity by contributing online here.
